Concept development for an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for off-shore wind parks in the Baltic States
Offshore-windfarms play a key role in renewable energy concepts. While this business is well developed around the North Sea and in the western part of the Baltic, it is a fairly new in the Baltic States. Along with other increasing commercial use of marine waters (shipping, sediment mining, harbour developments, etc.) it will soon lead to conflicts with aims of protection of NATURA 2000 and among these users which implicit a certain need for regional planning concepts. Guidelines for EIA for offshore waters will be required to ensure a successful integrated coastal zone management.

Financing Trends for NATURA 2000
Since 1st August 2006 till 1st December Baltic Environmental Forum implemented the project "Financing Trends for NATURA 2000" (Project No. LV/KNIP/001/05). Project was funded by Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands (MATRA program). This is an international project that fosters experience and dialog among the various nature conservation stakeholders in the Baltic states.

Marine Protected Areas in the Eastern Baltic Sea
Since 1st August 2005 till 31st July 2009 Baltic Environmental Forum-Latvia is implementing the project “Marine Protected Areas in the Eastern Baltic Sea” (Baltic MPAs). Project is supported by European Commission LIFE programme.

INAWARE:Cross-border cooperation on integrated nature and water resource management between Bauska and Biržai districts
Due to implementation of the EU nature conservation and water management policies, Latvia and Lithuania face similar challenges today. The EU Member States have been assigned new tasks in these fields - setting up EU network of nature protected areas called NATURA 2000; developing river basin management plans, planning of local nature conservation measures, etc. Now regional and local authorities have a role to play in practical implementation of the nature conservation and water management policies by participating and contributing to various planning processes.

Phare - biodiversity monitoring
Since 22nd February 2005 till December 2005 Baltic Environmental Forum is implementing the project "Implementation of the biodiversity monitoring requirements in accordance with the EU Birds and Habitats Directives through facilitating cooperation and stakeholder networking in the Baltic States". This project is supported by Phare Cross Border Co-operation Programme in the Baltic Sea Region for Latvia 2002.

BANAT project
The project “Baltic States’ Regional Co-operation Programme for Natura 2000”, called BANAT, was set-up to assist the three Baltic Ministries of Environment in the implementation of the requirements of the Birds and Habitats Directives and development of the NATURA 2000 Network. It was also meant to support the countries in the negotiation process with the European Commission on the Annexes of both Directives.

BANAT-MP project
The Baltic Environmental Forum has started a project “Management of NATURA 2000 sites – needs, possibilities, perspectives” (BANAT-MP) to support Latvian nature conservation authorities in the process of preparation of management plans, accompanying it with info-exchange and increasing know-how on particular issues, e.g. public involvement and socio-economic aspects of management of NATURA 2000 sites.
