The second episode of LIFE LATESTadapt podcast is out

The second episode of LIFE LATESTadapt podcast “Adapt to Thrive” focuses on one of the most practical solutions in urban environments – rain gardens.

The episode explores:

  • what a rain garden is,
  • how it works and how it differs from other stormwater management solutions,
  • how rain gardens help manage stormwater in cities and reduce the load on drainage systems,
  • how rain gardens can help reduce flood risks during heavy rainfall events.

The discussion covers both biological and technical aspects – the use of native plants, biodiversity, water infiltration into the soil, as well as sensors, monitoring, and modelling in urban stormwater management. The episode also addresses practical challenges faced by municipalities, architects and engineers when implementing green infrastructure in urban areas, including design, construction, maintenance and cost comparisons with traditional engineering solutions.

The episode features experts from Latvia and Estonia – researchers, landscape architects, and urban planners: Ivar Annus (TalTech) – urban water systems expert, Jurijs Kondratenko (Riga Technical University) – sensors and digital solutions in urban environments,  Mart Meriste (Nordic Botanical) – biodiversity and native plant communities, Mārīte Sprudzāne (ALPS Landscape Studio) – landscape architecture in Latvia,  Gen Mandre (4people, Estonia) – landscape architecture and sustainable stormwater systems.
