Climate Change Hazards in Zemgale: How the Region Prepares for Future Floods
In July 2024, Jelgava experienced one of the most severe floods in recent decades – within just 24 hours, the city received three months’ worth of rainfall. Surrounded by the Lielupe, Driksa, and Svēte rivers, Jelgava is no stranger to flooding, yet the impacts of climate change are making the situation increasingly critical. Milder winters, heavier rainfalls, and overloaded infrastructure are raising risks for residents, businesses, and municipalities.
Within the IMPETUS project, partners in Latvia – the Baltic Environmental Forum, the Zemgale Planning Region, and Jelgava Digital Centre – are working together to:
-
prepare the Zemgale region for future floods,
-
strengthen climate resilience,
-
introduce and improve early warning systems.

The IMPETUS project is funded under the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme, call LC-GD-1-3-2020 – Climate-resilient Innovation Packages for EU regions.
