Water & watermanagement

Review on 5th ESP Europe Conference

ESP hosted its 5th European conference under the theme Ecosystem Services: One Planet, One Health (18-22 November 2024 | Wageningen, The Netherlands).

The theme referred to the question of how the ecosystem services concept can address the challenges involved in delivering the global vision of One Health. It highlighted the interdependence of human health, animal and plant health, ecosystem health, and the health of the global environment. The theme aligns with international commitments under the Global Biodiversity Framework and is at the heart of the sustainable development goals. These goals can only be achieved in a healthy and fair economic system that takes the full value of nature`s contributions to human wellbeing into account.

LIFE GoodWater IP project was presented by A. Ruskule from BEF-Latvia in the session B2 “Living waters: Ecosystem services of freshwater biodiversity” presenting the comprehensive framework for assessment of freshwater cultural ecosystem services developed and tested in the LIFE GoodWater IP project. The presented approach allows to demonstrate the relationship between structures & functions of freshwater ecosystems and satisfaction of human needs and well-being.

LIFE LATESTadapt project was presented by A. Reķe from BEF-Latvia in the session B10c “Approaches for integrating ecosystem services and nature-based solutions in landscape and urban planning and policy”. The presentation focused on the assessment of cultural ecosystem services developed within the project and integration of the results into the Greening Plan of Riga to improve climate resilience of the city.
