On 7 November 2024, LIFE FitforREACH-2 partners and other waste experts met at an international workshop in Riga. We discussed the regulatory framework for waste management and presented practical examples of the opportunities and challenges in recycling different types of waste and identifying hazardous substances in waste streams at the workshop.
Participants from each country in working groups discussed the most relevant waste streams where hazardous substances are a burden for recycling, as well as potential cooperation within the project.
The seminar was attended by waste management companies, processors, responsible ministries and waste sector experts from the Baltic States and Poland.
One of the focus areas in LIFE FitforREACH-2 project is related to supporting waste treatment companies to manage waste containing hazardous substances. Within the course of implementation, project partners want to improve awareness and understanding of the waste treatment sector about chemicals in wastes and how they affect the quality of secondary materials, to offer methodological and practical support to the sector in the Baltic States and Poland, and to pilot concrete actions with recruited companies. On top, the project team looks for networking with experts, authorities, waste treatment companies, as well as with international and national associations to exchange on chemicals and the circular economy.
