Sustainable mobility

The Commuting Master Plan has been published

Sustainable urban mobility is one of the priority areas for cities in the European Union. The development of sustainable mobility can be assessed in terms of the share of different modes of transport, transport pollution, congestion, as well as the coverage and accessibility of public transport in cities and surrounding areas.

Trends in mobility and commuting (daily movement of people from their place of residence in one territorial unit to another territorial unit due to work and study and back) in Latvia and elsewhere in the world require changes in the transport network and logistics concepts, increasingly using multimodal solutions.

The growing challenges of commuting are being addressed by improving mobility opportunities, such as the introduction of mobility hubs, various shared transport solutions, the widespread use of smart devices, while ensuring mobility as a service.

Commuting Master Plan is a medium-term development planning document of regional significance for the period from 2021 to 2027. The aim of the CMP is to improve the opportunities for sustainable mobility in the process of commuting between Riga, Pieriga and the municipalities of the territories affecting it.

It is developed in accordance with the Riga Planning Region Sustainable Development Strategy 2014-2030 strategic objectives and long-term development priorities. CMP complements the Action Plan for the Development of the Riga Metropolitan Area, which emphasizes the diversification of transport modes and their adaptation to the required scale and purpose of use. The plan is also part of the vision of the spatial vision of the mobility of the Riga metropolitan area regarding the development of the external and internal accessibility of the metropolitan area.

The CMP has been prepared within the framework of the INTERREG project “Sustainable Urban Mobility and Commuting in
Baltic ” (SUMBA) (Contract No. R074).
