Sustainable urban mobility and commuting in Baltic cities

Cyclurban

The project “SUMBA” aims to make commuter traffic more sustainable. Even with the trend of re-urbanisation, commuter traffic to surrounding areas continues to be a problem. The areal separation of jobs and homes leads to a high commuting volume, mostly caused by individual cars. This adds to the challenge of reducing air pollution, ensuring noise- and climate-protection and it causes conflicts of how to use public spaces, too.

Furthermore, it is decreasing the liveability of urban areas. Solutions to this problem are intermodal and connected mobility systems as well as improved infrastructure. This could help to ensure the attractivity of public transport, cycling and walking infrastructure.

SUMBA is going to develop planning tools for traffic- and urban planners to help them find better mobility solutions for the city- and surroundings, and how to implement those in their strategies. Altogether, these tools will be tested in ten model regions around the Baltic Sea. BEF Germany is supporting the SUMBA project as an extern project-leader commissioned by the municipality Hamburg-Altona.
